The Silky Oak (Grevillea Robusta) is a native fast growing and adaptable tree in Australia and can grow to 20 metres and have a lifespan up to 100 years.
It was originally native only to eastern Australia but now can be found across the country, in gardens, on streets, and nature strips. Silky Oaks grow in different climates and soil types and can tolerate both drought and frost.
Although originally from NSW, it is now considered a weed species in Sydney and the Blue Mountains and in some parts of Victoria.
Once turned and polished, this wood makes a beautiful golden grain with interesting flecks contained within and also attains a high gloss finish which makes this a popular and much-loved wood and in turn an excellent choice of wood for pens.
